ROOTS Tools
To kick off 2011, we went through a series with our students about learning to develop spiritual disciplines in their life so that they can build strong spiritual roots. As a part of that we’ve put together several things to help them bring the things they are learning home into their daily lives. One, is a parent discussion guide to help families discuss how they can make spiritual disciplines a part of their life. The second is a set of tools that students can take home to work through on their own and learn more.
These are tools we have developed specifically to help our students begin deepening their relationship with God. We are challenging our students to take one tool at a time so that they can stay committed to growing in one area before they begin trying something else. Once students have completed one tool, they just need to bring it in to show us that they have completed a tool and then they can get a new tool to work through. The tools we have available are:
- Read the Bible – We actually have two resources for this topic. The first is a booklet to help students understand the basics about the Bible and help them get started on a daily reading plan. The second is a book we are sellingcalled the One-Minute Bible for Students. It is a great tool for beginning to learn to read the Bible every day. The Biblesare available at a discounted rate of$10 each. (This is the only tool we allow students to have in addition to another one they may want to begin.) – Download a preview
- Open up to God – This tool is a packet that students work through on prayer. It challenges them to understand prayer better and to try a few new ways of talking to God.- Download a preview
- Offer Yourself – This packet takes students through several different ways that they can give back to God. It is made up of three sessions. The first helps the students learn about giving/tithing and it includes a bank that students are challenged to save money in to give to church. The last two sessions help walk students through their spiritual gifts and other abilities to help them find good ways they can begin to serve God.- Download a preview
- Talk to Others – This is a tool that guides students through the process of forming an accountability group. They will learn about the importance of having strong Christian friends around them and they will begin meeting with one or two people who can challenge them to continue growing in Christ.- Download a preview
- Study God’s Word – This is our final tool and it is a program designed to help students begin memorizing scripture. We have made up keychain cards that students can take with them anywhere. Then, once they have learned the verses, we have a self test students can give themselves to show that they really know them all.- Download a preview
The tools are free for the students to keep but we ask them to sign up if they are going to take one so we can keep track of who is working on what. If you have any questions or comments, or if you want to get one for your student, please do not hesitate to contact Chris.
